Why We Created Hinoki

All of the ‘wonders of the world’ have been seen. There are now few places at all that have never been seen before by modern civilization, and even more importantly, we are beginning to realize that being the first to see a place is less important than what you actually experience while you are there. Visiting iconic places no longer allures the true investigators of human and natural mystery. And, the impact of having too many people pilgrimage to these sites has taken a toll on the physical and spiritual well-being of the places themselves, and the people and wildlife who inhabit them.

Now, we are waking up to the reality that it is our inner world which has gone largely undiscovered. Our imaginations grow weak when we have been overstimulated, so creativity cannot flourish. Immune systems are suppressed by modern life’s disruptions and over-reliance on the digital realm depletes our energy. Passion, joy, and peace need space and time.

In a natural environment, we psychologically reconnect to the essentials that nourish our human lives. Scientific evidence has brought us concepts such as the Savannah Theory, which proves that our bodies and minds fundamentally benefit from time spent in nature. We believe that in this era,  the purpose of travel now should be for us to travel deeper into nature, deeper into ourselves, and to forge stronger connections to one another.

Just before the 2020 pandemic shook the world, the world had been rattled by the effects of overtourism. Too many travelers flocking to the same places was leaving a devastating impact on the culture and landscape of communities on every continent. But this hasn’t just been hard on the destination—it’s been hard on the travelers, too. Travel–when not mindfully planned–can be jarring, overstimulating, and over-stuffed with sites and activities to cross off a ‘bucket list.’ We believe it’s time to do away with the bucket list. Go to fewer places and maybe go to a few places you’ve never even considered before. Let the world, and yourself, surprise you.

We provide travel experiences designed to remove chronic stressors and provide opportunities for increased creative thinking. Itineraries are reviewed by neuroscience researchers to ensure the best possible outcomes for your mind and nervous system. We work to balance adventure with a sense of calm. In this state, your travel experience can have a long-term impact on the quality of your life.

We focus on deep travel, like the kind that Tony Hiss has advocated for. We want you to slow down and connect to the details. Experience each moment with all senses present. The destinations we’ve chosen are each selected for the unique qualities they offer for mental and physical rejuvenation. Every experience is also designed to reduce our ecological footprint and increase the preservation of local environments and cultures.

Our work is the way in which we love the world. Empathy and sensitivity guides our process. We will get to know you before we present you with a retreat design so that we really understand your unique “why.”
